St. Mary’s Syrian Orthodox Church in Abu Dhabi, is a full-fledged parish directly under the Holy Apostolic See of Antioch and All the East. Our church has the rare honour of being the only church in the Gulf area, which is directly, looked after by our Patriarch H. H. Ignatius Zakka 1Iwas. This church is established, with a view to fulfilling the spiritual and social needs of the members of the Syrian Orthodox Christian community and Syrian Orthodox Knanaya Christian community from Kerala who are presently residing in Abu Dhabi.
Sunday School, Youth Association, Charity and Benevolent works etc. are the other spiritual activities of the church.
We are deeply grateful to St Andrew’s Centre for all facilities provided to us.
The History Of The Syrian Orthodox Church At A Glance
This Church enjoys the greatest prestige in the history of Christendom since it is the first Church which was established in Jerusalem out of the Apostles, Preachers and other early converts, and was grafted in Antioch by those who were converted from among the Arameans and other gentile elements. It can justifiably claim the wealthiest liturgical and musical heritage, besides a proud theological and missionary record. The Church and its parishioners still use Syrian-Aramaic, the language spoken by our Lord Jesus Christ, for prayers and services. The Church suffered untold hardships and tragedies including massacres and repeated transfer of the See of the Patriarchate from one locality to another due to political and other developments until it settled in Damascus-Syria. Historians declare that the survival of this Church was nothing short of a miracle. The current Patriarch of Antioch and all the East, the Supreme Head of Universal Syrian Orthodox Church is His Holiness Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas. The church provides spiritual guidance to over four million parishioners through out the world.
