The Church of South India, the largest Protestant Church in India, was formed in 1947 by the combination of different historical Churches, such as the Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian and congregational Churches. Our motto is our Lord’s High Priestly Prayer: “That they may all be one.” We have enjoyed the patronage and co-operation of the Anglican Church for many years. For this, we are grateful to the pioneers of the Church of England, whose memory we hold in great affection, from which the Anglican Church, world -wide is derived. The faith of the Church can be summarized as follows:
1. The CSI accepts the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as containing all things necessary to salvation and as the supreme and decisive standard of faith.
2. The CSI also accepts the Apostles’ Creed and the Nicene Creed as witnessing to and safeguarding that faith.
3. The CSI believes that the sacraments of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are means of Grace through which God works in us.
4. The Church desires to maintain the historic episcopacy. The ultimate aim of CSI is the Catholic unity of the divided members of Christ’s Body; it strives to reach that goal, planting its congregations in many different parts of the world. CSI maintains the historic episcopacy and also operates many charitable institutions such as orphanages, homes for the destitute and elderly, homes for boys and girls, schools for the mentally retarded, training and rehabilitation for the handicapped, hospitals in rural areas, over 88 graduate colleges, 400 boarding homes and hostels as well. Today our church has 21 Dioceses and parishes in the southern states of India, with a membership of more than 1.5 million.
